This semester, Natasha Bhuta (MPA-DP ‘20) presented at an event by Mapping Data Flows, a research project led by John Battelle, co-founding Editor of WIRED magazine, on what governs data in society, especially around data harvesting. Their research project turned the privacy policies/terms of service of the big four tech companies Google, Amazon, Facebook and Apple, into an interactive database that can be queried, compared, and visualized. They presented case studies illustrating the “Illusion of Privacy Settings” and “Are they Listening”. The entirety of the project and whitepaper on their findings can be found at mappingdataflows.com.
